Amazon Books is planning to open another Bay Area store in Berkeley. A recent project description online revealed a permit request for interior tenant improvements for Amazon Books at 1785 Fourth St., the East Bay Times reports. Amazon Books is expected to fill retail space formerly occupied by Crate & Barrel.

The e-commerce giant previously opened bookstores at Santana Row in San Jose and at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek. There are 13 additional stores around the country, including three in the works for Pacific Palisades, California, Lone Tree, Colorado, and Bethesda, Maryland.

The bookstore uses information from Amazon’s site, Goodreads and Kindle to determine what kinds of books it should include on its shelves. The expansion of Amazon Books into the Bay Area has caused some concern among independent bookstores, which have been struggling to stay in business for years. These bookstores have been offering local author events as well as book subscriptions for young readers and next-day ordering to stay competitive.

Fourth Street has added additional high-profile retailers such as Apple and Lululemon in recent years.
