The evolution of the retail music store has taken an interesting turn at Yonge and Dundas, with the news there that the hmv Canada store there will undergo a remodeling to accommodate a live music and event experience (the fact that hmv is across the street from the late and lamented Sam The Record Man store doesn’t go unnoticed). The onset of digital downloads has been killing the bricks and mortar music establishment, forcing players like hmv to get creative. Hmv Underground will feature live performances, autograph sessions and art exhibits. “Anything that enhances the retail experience is a good thing and will bring more people to our stores,” company president Nick Williams says.
