Seattle-based design firm Miller Hull recently won a 2019 National Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design from the American Institute of Architects for its Pike Place MarketFront building. The design team’s goal was to integrate the building into the Pike Place Market District’s 100-year-old, eclectic character.

The building was constructed on the site of a former municipal building that was destroyed in a 1974 fire. The new building includes public space that connects the market to transit stops and shopping.

The building features pathways that will eventually link the market to the shoreline promenade on the waterfront. The design includes concrete post-and-beam structures, heavy timber elements and 50 vendor stalls. It features 40 low-income and senior apartments, retail and office space as well as public restrooms and 300 underground parking spaces.

The project was completed in 2017. It is only the second addition to Pike Place Market in nearly 40 years. Pike Place MarketFront will eventually lead down to Overlook Walk, which will be part of Seattle’s multiphase waterfront revitalization project.
