Bay Area Airbnb guests are expected to generate more than $21M in economic activity in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and the South Bay during Super Bowl 50 weekend, the company said this week.
Airbnb expects more than 15,000 guests this weekend in the San Francisco or South Bay—four times more than stayed in Phoenix for last year's Super Bowl. Rental demand surged in the Bay Area for this weekend. The average Bay Area booking over Super Bowl weekend has been $225/night, comparable to the $216 to $599/night cost of a two-star hotel, the company adds. Airbnb says the numbers show how it can help cities host big events.
Airbnb also compiled some fun statistics on who will be staying in the area this weekend:
Broncos fans will outnumber Panthers fans nearly 2-1 in the Bay Area (based on Facebook and Airbnb data);
Many Seahawks fans from Seattle and Portland who booked before the playoffs canceled their reservations after the loss to the Panthers, causing a spike of four times the normal rate;
Many Patriots fans in Boston held off making reservations before the playoffs, booking at a lower rate than fans from Phoenix, Charlotte or Denver.
