California College of the Arts is nearing the initial phases of its large on-campus housing project in San Francisco. A building permit was filed Feb. 16 for new construction at 188 Hooper St., according to BuildZoom. The project’s construction cost is listed as $28.6M.
The five-story, 280-unit student housing building will replace a one-story painting studio building used by graduate programs. The project would create up to 600 beds, according to previous planning documents.
The project also includes commercial retail, production, distribution and repair space and a parking garage with a stacker system. An existing building at 184 Hooper St. would remain. The project is expected to deliver in 2020. The building permit listed Nibbi Brothers as the contractor and Natomo Architects as the designer.
CCA plans to build housing for 1,000 students by 2025. The project along Hooper Street and another project at 75 Arkansas, expected to deliver in the fall, will create about 800 beds, according to BuildZoom. The private arts college also is in the process of expanding its San Francisco campus, which will be designed by Studio Gang, and moving its Oakland campus to San Francisco.
