Uptown Station's proposed anchor retail tenant said it wants out. Following Uber’s announcement to sell the building, Newberry Market said it will no longer lease 20K SF of ground-floor retail space, Eater reports. The tenant would have brought a full-scale grocery store into a retail-starved corridor of Downtown Oakland.
Newberry Market, a project from Oakland residents Ann Thai and Loren Goodwin, joined Uptown Station in 2015 before Uber purchased the building, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
The retailer was beset by project delays and constant back-and-forth with design teams over how to appeal to Oakland’s demographic, and Newberry Market decided to pull out of its deal, according to Goodwin. He said until Uber decides what to do with the building, customers will not likely come to Uptown Station.
