Sands CEO's Proposed Las Vegas NFL Stadium Could Lure Raiders

Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson wants to build a $1B stadium in southern Nevada that could provide a new home for the Oakland Raiders after the team was shut out of its bid to move to Los Angeles.

Raiders owner Mark Davis met with Adelson on Friday. The Sands Corp is partnering with the University of Nevada - Las Vegas on plans for a 65,000-seat, domed stadium near McCarran International Airport, according to ESPN.

UNLV recently purchased the 42 acres (the empty property in the upper right-hand corner of the above map). One option would be to build a new football stadium. The university could form a public-private partnership with Adelson to build a stadium that would be used by UNLV and the Raiders. The NFL has not supported putting a team in Las Vegas because of its gambling industry.

The Raiders are expected to stay in Oakland for the 2016 season, but have been looking for other sites since NFL owners decided the St. Louis Rams should move to Los Angeles and gave the San Diego Chargers the option to join them. If the Chargers decline (they have until January 2017 to make their choice), the Raiders could still be given the option to join the Rams at their new stadium in Inglewood built by Rams' owner Stan Kroenke (here's everything you need to know about Stan).
