A new set of data visualizations from Econsult Solutions gives insight into travel patterns in and around Philadelphia, such as rush hour times and most common points of origin.
Travel data from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission's 2012-2013 Household Travel Survey shows 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. are the Philly area's rush hours, and 80% of all transit in the region is by car. Public transit made up only 6% of trips during the surveyed period, slightly more than half of the 11% taken up by walking or biking.
Some of the areas from which the most commuters originate include Norristown, Cherry Hill and Upper Darby. Towns like these are primarily commuter-based, with 93% of Norristown residents working in other locations, and 90% of Norristown-based employees residing elsewhere.
That underscores the dearth of true live-work-play areas in Philadelphia's suburbs, a trend that is beginning to shift directions thanks to the King of Prussia Town Center.
