| Wednesday, we dropped by the Javits Center for BuildingsNY & GreenBuildingsNY’s annual trade show, where Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz opened up the event with an update on development in his county. Brooklyn will always be a separate cityfrom Manhattan, he says, and the proof is in the young peoplemaking a move from Manhattan to “the promised land,” he says. Although there have been no projects without conflict (he says the borough has “anti-development fever”), it manages to get things done. He credited Mayor Bloomberg for being on-target withaffordable housing development, “but we’re still far away from enough,” he says. Upcoming developments: Atlantic Yards, the former Domino Sugar Factory in Greenpoint, Broadway Triangle, and Coney Island. |
| Marty (who we might add has neverridden the Wonder Wheel orCyclone) joins members of the Associated Builders and Owners of Greater New York to cut the ribbon into the show, which brings together building professionals to source new products and solutions for the retrofit, renovation, restoration, and maintenance of buildings. To meet goals of affordable housing, Brooklyn requiresthoughtful rezoning of manufacturing. | Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of ABO’s Nicholas LaPorte, who died March 1. Nick was the association’s executive director for 13 years, and was a fixture at BuildingsNY/GreenBuildingsNY. He is survived by his son Matthew, daughter-in-law Anna, and granddaughter Ava. (We snapped the above photo of him in 2009 at one of ABO’s luncheons, right before the birth of Ava, and he told us how excited he was to become agrandfather.)
