| Queens wasn’t the only happening borough yesterday. Six acres of Brooklyn Bridge Park opened, complete with hills, bike paths, a playground, concessions, water features, and Granite Prospect— steps built from stones salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge reconstruction. This is Skanska USA’s initial completion of Phase 1, a $50M portion of the 9.5-acre Pier 1, and marked the park’s official opening to the public. (Above, Skanska' Richard Kennedy and James Robinson.) When complete, it'll be the largest park to open in Brooklyn since Prospect Park nearly 150 years ago. The 85-acre park replaces abandoned piers, parking lots, and storage sheds, and stretches 1.3 miles along the East River from John St to Atlantic Ave. Another 12 acres are scheduled to open by late spring/summer. |
