On Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo laid out a plan for a 1.2M SF addition to the Jacob Javits Convention Center. It’s an increase of about about 50% from the complex's current size. The price tag’s estimated at $1B, a bill that’ll be picked up by the convention center’s operator, the state-run Empire State Development Corp.

Doubling down on the addition, which sits in a suddenly hot part of town adjacent to Hudson Yards, could be the kiss of death for proposals to build other convention centers in places like Sunnyside Yards and Aqueduct Racetrack, both in Queens, according to Curbed.

The addition is heavy on amenities—especially outdoor ones. It’ll have a green roof and 22k SF dedicated to outdoor events.

In his announcement, the governor said the Javits Center was the busiest convention center in the country, but said NYC’s convention industry has to grow to compete with other cities. He said the new space will translate into 4,000 full-time jobs and 2,000 part-time jobs. [Curbed]
