| A building reflect's its users values and mission, so you imagine what we'd find if we visited the Wildlife Conservation Society's new Center for Global Conservation at the Bronx Zoo. FXFOWLE senior partner Sylvia Smith, designer of the LEED-Gold Certified building, tells us the Center sets a model for environmental design:sensitively integrated into the site; connecting occupants to nature with abundant natural daylight, unobstructed sightlines, and a sloped green roof; and using minimal resources and energy. Other sustainable projects the firm's working on include the Javits Center renovation and expansion, a new high school at Hunters Point South, Lincoln Center's green roof, and the pending LEED-Gold certified Eleven Times Square. |
| In addition to a 92% construction-site recycling rate, occupant recycling points were integrated into the building's design—just one of the green initiatives in which FXFOWLE encourages its clients to participate. We took a trip up to FXFOWLE's roof to see one of its own green initiatives in action: composting food scraps from its three kitchens (which includes plenty of coffee). Director of sustainability Ilana Judah shows us the four compost bins, which a FXFOWLE crew feeds and rotates weekly. With help from the Lower East Side Ecology Center, the firm has harvested enough compost to share with the staff and even give bags away at the nearby Union Square Green Market. They're now working with a waste management company to turn it into liquid fertilizer. |
