GREEN EXPO

Earlier in the morning, we stopped by Metropolitan Pavilion for the USGBC’s Urban Green Expo, which focuses on green products and a theme tied to the current regulatory and financial climate. The first day's events, expected to attract 1900 attendees, included vendors, educational seminars focusing on subjects like retrofits and corporate sustainability, building tours, and a keynote by Rohit Aggarwala, director of the Mayor's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability. (Trying to be green, we took LIRR instead of driving, and unfortunately missed his speech with train times and transfers.)
We did, however, drop by an educational seminar called “Small, Staunch & Green,” on the greening of the less-than-25k-SF tenant, who makes up 90% of New York City's tenant pool. Speaking on the subject were Newmark Knight Frank's Eric Gural, Social Science Research Council's Mary McDonnell, Denham Wolf's Sarah Eisinger, Cycle-7's Sean Neill, and moderator Jon Denham of Denham Wolf. One particular focus was on the SSRC's 10-year, 25k-SF lease at One Pierrepont Plaza in Brooklyn, whose green features allowed them to save space, encourage employee teamwork, and provide better light and airflow. Location, mass transit, sustainable amenities, and long-term leases are only a few factors that these tenants must consider, they say.
