Self-driving cars are not the end of the line for Uber. Instead, the company hopes to begin testing flying cars within three years.
Dallas-Fort Worth and Dubai officials agreed to let the company test cars that take off and land vertically by 2020, Bloomberg reports. The company said it is teaming up with real estate firms, aircraft manufacturers and an electric charging company to make flying cars a reality. In particular, Uber is working with Hillwood Properties and other real estate firms to build ports where flying cars can take off and land.
Uber is not the only company interested in flying cars. Alphabet CEO Larry Page funded two flying car projects, Kitty Hawk and Zee.Aero, which are both racing to create the first commercial personal aircraft.
Tesla founder Elon Musk is one person who is not excited about the prospect of flying cars. He told Bloomberg he thinks flying cars are too dangerous and are not a scalable solution. Instead, Musk said tunneling is the way to go.
