Responsibilities: When I’m not busy fulfilling my leadership duties as chair-elect of BOMA International, my responsibilities at Capstone include everything from leasing activity to developing business strategies to grow the company.
How he got involved in property management: I actually started as a painter for Zions Securities Corp; I moved into an assistant property manager role there and worked my way up the ladder to VP overseeing property management and vertical development, completing a degree in finance along the way.
Industry extracurriculars: Since 1994, I’ve been involved in the development and expansion of BOMA International’s suite of floor measurement standards. I also serve as an expert on the Standard Setting Committee of the International Property Measurement Standards Coalition (IPMSC), which recently completed the International Property Measurement Standard for Office Buildings. At home, I've been active with the Salt Lake Chamber, serving on its Board and executive and finance committees; was chair of the Downtown Alliance of Salt Lake City; and have served in several positions in the Boy Scouts of America.
Daily habit: In my free moments, I enjoy Sudoku, golf, basketball and puzzles.
Favorite book: The Lord of the Rings.
Favorite album: Renegade by Styx.
Favorite movie: The Bourne films.
Favorite restaurant: Il Trillo Ristorante near Massa, Italy.
Favorite vacation: I enjoyed exploring Verona, Italy, where many impressive ancient Roman structures are still in use today.
First job: Beginning at the age of 11, I worked at my grandfather’s company, Venema Decorating, as a painter and wallpaper hanger.
Job in another life: Intellectual property attorney.
Item on bucket list: I would love to see all of the New Seven Wonders of the World—two down, five to go.
Person you'd like to meet, dead or alive: Abraham Lincoln.
Family life: I’ve been married to my wife, Janelle, for 33 years, and we have nine children and 11 grandchildren.
Startling fact: I play trumpet, French horn, piano and guitar—some better than others!
