Biden Nominates Beacon Capital CEO Alan Leventhal As Ambassador To Denmark

President Joe Biden has tapped Beacon Capital Partners CEO and Chairman Alan Leventhal to be ambassador to Denmark, the White House announced this week.

Leventhal founded the Boston real estate investment firm in 1998 as a private spinoff from the publicly traded Beacon Properties Corp., which sold to Equity Office Properties in 1997. Beacon owns nearly 200 office properties in core urban markets across the U.S.

Leventhal, named the “Nominee for Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Denmark,” was among Biden’s top financial donors in the Boston area and was involved in campaign events, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Beacon’s projects “have been transformational to the urban environment,” the White House said in a statement. Leventhal serves on the board of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, according to the White House, and previously served as board chair of Boston University, is on the executive committee of the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a life trustee of Northwestern University and is also board chair of the Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library.

Beacon has investments and projects across the country, with a recent focus on life sciences: It is redeveloping the former Boston Globe headquarters into a lab building and is developing a 700K SF life sciences building at the Texas Medical Center in Houston

Other nominations announced Wednesday include ambassadors to Brazil, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Chad in Africa, as well as nominations for posts within the Department of Energy, the National Council on the Humanities and the Securities Investor Protection Corp.

The nominations still await Senate approval. If confirmed, Leventhal would take over the position from Vintage Capital Group CEO Carla Sands, who left the post with the change in administrations last year.

Last week, Beacon Capital paid Invesco $291M for a 22-story office building in downtown Denver, according to BusinessDen.
