After announcing the U.S. will front the cost, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders today to move forward with plans to build a wall along the Mexican border.
One order calls for a "large physical barrier" to be erected along the border, while the second calls for stricter immigration enforcement within the country, according to press secretary Sean Spicer.
Trump is also expected to issue an order to punish sanctuary cities in addition to hiring 5,000 new border agents. The president announced his border-security plans to the Department of Homeland Security Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reports.
In its push for stricter immigration control, the Trump administration is considering the restoration of the controversial Secure Communities program, which former President Barack Obama removed. Should Trump's immigration plans succeed, particularly his call for the deportation of 11 million undocumented workers, the U.S. economy could suffer. [WSJ]
