To head the new venture, the firm has brought on Alec Maki, who previously worked on debt originations for Fortress Investment Group. Maki is joining Stockdale as a senior vice president.

With the new line of business, Stockdale plans to originate loans nationwide, including senior bridge loans, mezzanine loans, note purchases and special situation investments. The company said it will look at a broad range of asset types including office, life sciences and hospitality assets, where it believes “market liquidity has remained limited.”

The company is targeting loans between $15M and $75M, with a goal of deploying $300M over the next 12 months.

Maki will initially lead the effort alongside fellow Fortress veteran Chase Jensen, Stockdale's managing director of acquisitions, as the company plans more hires for the team.

“Stockdale has selectively invested in credit opportunities over the years and the launch of a dedicated credit vertical formalizes that effort and positions us to leverage our growing operating platform to pursue debt investments with greater scale, focus, and consistency,” Stockdale co-founder and Managing Partner Daniel Michaels said in the company’s release.

Stockdale has more than $3B in assets under management nationwide, from San Francisco to Houston to Denver to Fairfax, Virginia. Its latest buy was a 178K SF Southern California shopping center, which it purchased in partnership with Hamilton Lane for $157M.
