5 Game-Changing Projects Underway in Houston

Houston’s landscape is always evolving and we’ve compiled five projects underway that will shape our city’s future.

1. White Oak Music Hall

White Oak Music Hall, designed by Schaum|Shieh Architects and owned and developed by WOIH Partners, will boost the Houston music scene’s street cred. The five-acre, live music complex will be just north of downtown at 2915 North Main and North Street. The venue will feature two indoor stages and one outdoor stage with the capacity for up to 3,000 people. Pegstar Concerts is handling booking and production for the property, slated to host its first show in February.

2. Spaceport Houston

The spaceport will go a long way in securing Houston’s title of “Space City.” The new spaceport, located at Ellington Airport, is the 10th private spaceport in the nation, and is already attracting attention from big-name players. The 600-acre site boasts three runways with 24-hour traffic control. Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz says this facility will not only reinforce Houston’s connection with the aerospace industry, but will create a significant number of high-tech jobs.

3. The Post Oak

Renowned developer Tilman Fertitta’s The Post Oak is under construction. The 10-acre project features a 35-story, 650k SF tower with 240 luxury hotel rooms. Designed by Gensler and built by Tellepsen, the project also includes 140k SF of office space and 22 residential apartments. The development will also include an open plaza with outdoor dining and pedestrian areas. As Houston’s first vertical mixed-use hotel/office/multifamily/retail/restaurant development, The Post Oak is set to make a big splash.

4. SEARCH Homeless Services

SEARCH Homeless Services’ new headquarters, designed by Studio Red, is under construction in east downtown. The two-story, 27k SF building will include a large lobby, waiting areas, offices, meeting rooms and supporting facilities. Since 1989 SEARCH has helped thousands of people transition from homelessness and this new HQ will extend the organization's influence and allow it to continue effectively reaching Houston’s homeless population.

5. George R. Brown Convention Center

The George R. Brown Convention Center and the surrounding areas are slated for a major facelift. Retail, restaurants and a grand entrance will be added to the building, and a Metro station for a new light rail line will be at the northwest corner of the building. Additionally, The Marriott Marquis, a 29-story, 1,000-room hotel connected to the convention center, is under construction and will feature five restaurants and Houston’s largest ballroom.
