North Carolina came in fourth among U.S. states for the most new and expanded facilities in 2016, according to the latest Governor’s Cup competition in Site Selection magazine. Charlotte was among the top 10 metros with populations of more than 1 million for new and expanded facilities.
North Carolina announced 289 projects last year, behind only Texas, Ohio and Illinois, and ahead of Georgia and — remarkably — California, considering that state's size. Per capita, N.C. was No. 7 for its number of new and expanded facilities. Charlotte attracted 77 new and expanded facilities, putting it tenth among Tier 1 metro areas.
The Atlanta-based magazine has awarded the Governor’s Cup every year for almost 30 years. The rankings are based on facilities as tracked by the Conway Projects Database, which focuses on new corporate and expanded facilities, including HQs, factories, R&D operations and logistics sites.
