He needs to find a bone marrow or blood cord match in the next 12 weeks to survive a deadly form of leukemia which has relapsed, and it takes time to test and get results. There aren't enough people registered to find a match, especially for children like Devan who are a mix of ethnicities. He's 1/4 South Indian and 3/4 Northern European, and has a 1 in 200,000 chance of finding his match. They don't need an exact match; an African American can be a match for a Caucasian and vice versa.
