PORTMAN IN CHINA

We now know how to spell ?John Portman: Art & Architecture? in Chinese. Maybe. Here?s John Portman speaking at the opening of an exhibition about himself in  Shanghai this weekend. It was at the High Museum earlier this year and is now at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. It includes architectural projects, furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Portman, who has a long history in China: His Shanghai office opened in 1979 and earned the second-ever foreign business license in China. Portman's relationship and deep respect for China began when Deng Xiaoping, Paramount leader of the People's Republic of China, visited the Portman-designed Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta during a historic trip  to the US in  1979. Impressed by the architecture, he invited Portman to China.
