It was at the High Museum earlier this year and is now at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. It includes architectural projects, furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Portman, who has a long history in China: His Shanghai office opened in 1979 and earned the second-ever foreign business license in China. Portman's relationship and deep respect for China began when Deng Xiaoping, Paramount leader of the People's Republic of China, visited the Portman-designed Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta during a historic trip to the US in 1979. Impressed by the architecture, he invited Portman to China. |
