| This morning, we took our hats off to Atlanta architectural firm Cooper Carry's office at 191 Peachtree, which earned an Atlanta Downtown Design Excellence Award in the office category during the 2010 Downtown Development Day. We snapped Atlanta Magazine's publisher Sean McGinnis, Cooper Carry's Richard Stonis, Kevin Cantley, Brian Parker, Dots Colley, and Central Atlanta Progress' A.J. Robinson. The redevelopment of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Hughes Spalding hospital won a design excellence award in the community category and Grindhouse Killer Burgers at 209 Edgewood Ave. won for the restaurant category (and made us really hungry). And the Coca-Cola Co. won a Downtown Atlanta Economic Impact Award for its overall development of Pemberton Place, the land the company assembled by Centennial Olympic Park that is now home to both the World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium. |
| Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus provided a taped keynote address (he's undergoing cataract surgery, so wish him well) and says the impact of the Aquarium (above) and the Coke museum cannot be underestimated— even helping encourage the $3B in development that has occurred around the area in the past five years. Bernie says downtown will eventually become ?like a hub? that will draw and keep people downtown to eat, shop and live. He also calls NASCAR's 2006 decision to locate the Hall of Fame (which downtown was competing for) to Charlotte—that just opened this year—a ?bad decision? that will hurt both Atlanta and the museum. |
