De Blasio To Unveil Brooklyn, Queens Streetcar System Tonight

During tonight's State of the City speech, Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to unveil a proposal for a 16-mile waterfront streetcar line that will connect Sunset Park to Astoria along the East River, according to the New York Times.

The line would run above ground on rails embedded in public roadways and will flow alongside traffic. The system is expected to cost $2.5B, significantly less than a new underground subway line.

Under the plan, construction would start in 2019, with service targeted for 2024. The system will likely serve the growing commercial centers between the two hot neighborhoods, including the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Long Island City. [NYT]
