UWS Residents Fight Natural History Museum Expansion

New York

There's already an online petition to halt development of the American Museum of Natural History's expansion. Upper West Side residents furious about the 218k SF project to expand into Theodore Roosevelt Park have taken to posting notices online and in neighboring buildings. Local resident Sig Gissler, a former administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, says the expansion will destroy coveted green space, including at least nine trees, according to the West Side Rag. In a letter Gissler commended the museum's efforts to "promote scientific research and education" but writes that the expansion is "reckless and insensitive" because it uses parkland for construction. The museum's addition will be home to the new $325M Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation, designed by Jeanne Gang. [WSR]
