Amazon’s Drone Delivery Service Goes Live In The UK

Placeholder

Amazon announced Wednesday it made its first commercial delivery using drones to a British man outside Cambridge, putting the e-commerce giant in the lead in yet another category.

The delivery marks the official start of Amazon’s drone program, which hopes to use drones to deliver packages to customers in half an hour or less, the Wall Street Journal reports. It took three years of jumping through regulatory hoops and overcoming skepticism, but now the program is live—in the UK at least. The company is working on gaining approval in the US.

The online retailer says it will make drone deliveries to Amazon Prime customers living within 5.2 square miles of a fulfillment center near Cambridge. Items delivered by drone must weigh less than five pounds, but according to a spokeswoman, that includes 87% of the products Amazon sells. [WSJ]
