GSA Keeps DHS in Ballston

Arlington's run of losses in keeping government tenants has come to a (possibly temporary) end. Last Friday, the GSA announced it was renewing the lease for the Department of Homeland Security at Brookfield Office Properties' 1110 N Glebe Rd in Ballston. The lease is for 120k SF and was brokered by Colliers International. It's fair to say the renewal came as a relief to Arlington Economic Development (whose offices are just a couple of blocks away), which is weathering the recent and/or impending defections of the National Science Foundation, the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Transportation Security Administration, all departing for cheaper space elsewhere in Northern Virginia. The DHS' National Protection and Programs Directorate occupies the space, and expanded it in 2011. Because of the recent investment in Brookfield's property, GSA didn't release a formal RFP for space.
