16 Things You Need to Know This Morning
What You Don't Know About Richard Lake
Title: Partner, Roadside Development.
Background: Started it 17 years ago with Armond Spikell (who hired him out of college to work at Smithy Braedon) and Todd Weiss (land developer doing shopping center in Sterling who hired him to lease it up); Richard eventually ran Smithy's retail group.
Reason for name: Did a lot of CVS's, sitting around one night decided they built things along road.
Projects: Cityline at Tenley (204 luxury condos above 90k retail in former Sears store), Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge (300 apts, 500k retail like Wegmans, REI, and Apple).
Most recent: City Market at 0--4 acres, 497 apartments in three towers, Cambria Suites in fourth tower, 90k feet of retail including biggest Giant in city; Mintwood opening a restaurant.
Future projects: Negotiating three grocery-anchored projects, hope to announce in 2-3 months a sort of O Street Market for close-in Northern Virginia.
Specialty: Residential on top of retail; 16 grocery stores.
Grew up: Silver Spring, went to Churchill, father owned lots of stores including Zebra Room.
First job: Bond company in Boston, was going to be Wall Street trader, then market crashed.
Most complex assignment: City Market--involved TIFs, federal HUD money, historic preservation, EB-5 financing, Obama fast track infrastructure.
Favorite song/music group: Thunder Road, Springsteen, have seen him four times.
Favorite book: Pillars of the Earth, how culture grows out of structures.
Favorite vacay: Sailing with family in BVIs on 46 foot catamaran.
Fam: Married college sweetheart, two girls and a boy (24, 21, 16).
Startling fact: Kids make fun of him for wiping eyes at movies—in case you don't think developers can be sensitive.
