What You Don’t Know About Susan Kay

Title: Mid-Atlantic region SVP, Transwestern.

Company: Four offices, over 300 employees in DC metro out of 34 offices and 2,000 employees nationwide; $4b in transactions done in 2013 – $2b in sales and leasing deals in mid-Atlantic. 
Job: Bethesda-based tenant broker focused on Montgomery and Prince Georges counties and No. Va.
Current project: Representing Montgomery Hospice, nonprofit dependent on (diminishing) Medicare reimbursements. Renegotiated 13,500 SF lease at 1355 Piccard Dr., Rockville. Worked closely with staff and became inspired by the mission.  
Memorable project: Represented Giant Food (along with partner Mark Boyce) in renegotiation of long-term lease for 55k SF office space in Landover.
Why CRE career: Grew up in a CRE family – Dad and two uncles were developers, so always part of the dinner table discussion. 
Grew up: Rockville.
Childhood memory: Special outings to Hot Shoppes in Bethesda and hiking Sugarloaf Mountain. 
Current home: Potomac.
School: Syracuse (marketing and communications).
First job: Waitress at Bob’s Big Boy on Rockville Pike – had to lie about age.
Job in another life: Therapist, counselor, or life coach – love problem solving.
Daily habit: Exercise – Elliptical, run, and weights.
Favorite app: Up by Jawbone – Won’t go to bed until 10,000 steps have been walked.
Favorite movie: When Harry Met Sally.
Favorite restaurant: Woodmont Grill (Bethesda) – Get the grilled chicken salad!
Favorite musician and song: Billy Joel – You’re My Home.
Favorite vacation spot: Margate, NJ.
Guilty pleasure: Starbucks.
Bucket list: Family trip to Israel.
Family: Married to Barry Flax 25 years (met first year out of college while working at Julien Studley in Maryland); three kids (21, 20, 13), and three dogs - Wheaten Terrier, Golden Doodle, and Labradoodle. 
Hobbies: Hiking with dogs along canal and Billy Goat Trail with kids. 
Startling fact: Was in Syracuse dance troupe – performed at half time during football and basketball games.
