Obituary: Steve Beck

The Down Syndrome community lost one of its strongest advocates this week. Steve Beck Jr., vice chair of the the National Down Syndrome Society and the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia, died at his home on Monday. His focus for the last few years was getting the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act passed; it made it through the House last week and a vote is looming in the Senate. The bill creates tax-free savings accounts for people with disabilities to cover qualified expenses like education, housing and transportation. NDSS interim president Sara Hart Weir tweeted this picture of Steve and his family, crediting him for moving along the legislation and urging the Senate to pass it. Several other friends and colleagues also used social media this week to push for passage.
