WeWork’s newest Bay Area location brings the coworking company into the suburbs, marking a shift in the company’s strategy of focusing on dense urban sites. The company has leased 35K SF at 1 Belvedere Drive in Mill Valley.

“This Mill Valley location will serve as a [complementary] outpost to the many entrepreneurs, executives, and small businesses at WeWork, scaled to meet the needs of the dynamic community north of San Francisco,” WeWork General Manager for Northern California Elton Kwok said in an emailed statement.

Coworking providers have been slowly growing in suburban markets with locations popping up in suburbs of New Jersey, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Atlanta. More suburban markets are increasing in density and transforming into amenity-rich neighborhoods that have live-work-play elements attractive to aging millennials wishing to start families.

Kwok said WeWork has been reporting demand from people in Mill Valley wishing to work remotely and others seeking a platform where they can work anywhere in the world.

The 35K SF location will have 350 desks and is expected to open Dec. 1. Desks start at $500/month and private offices start at $1,020/month.

WeWork has significantly grown its Bay Area footprint in the last 18 months, expanding not just in San Francisco, but also into Oakland and Mountain View. The coworking company has about 2M SF of office space across 17 locations in the Bay Area and is now the fourth-largest tenant in San Francisco.

WeWork has 248,000 members around the world with both physical and virtual offerings and currently has 258 physical locations in 74 cities and 22 countries.
