UC Berkeley Prepares for Historic Boom

The 147-year-old UC Berkeley is about to undergo one of the biggest building booms in its history with several large projects in the pipeline.

Highlights include a $223M renovation of the Lower Sproul Plaza and a new $24M Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. The largest project in the pipeline will also be the biggest in the school’s history: A new Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay that will bring 5.5M SF of new academic and research space as it’s built over the course of 40 years, expanding the campus by 40%.

The building boom can be partially attributed to a drop in state funding that has forced the school to seek out additional partnerships and revenue streams. Chancellor of Real Estate Robert LaLanne has overseen the university’s efforts to expand its real estate holdings. [SFBT]
