News radio station WTOP is moving its headquarters across the Maryland-D.C. border into Montgomery County.
The station signed a deal for over 30K SF at 5425 Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase, moving from its longtime home at 3400 Idaho Ave. NW in D.C.'s Cathedral Commons neighborhood, Bethesda Magazine reports.
WTOP plans to move its more than 200 employees into the space on the building's fifth floor in December. The Chevy Chase building, owned by an affiliate of Chevy Chase Land Co., sits two blocks from the Friendship Heights Metro station, just across Western Avenue in Montgomery County. It is on the same block as a Giant grocery store and restaurant Clyde's.
The radio station is the second local D.C. media outlet to announce a move into Montgomery County in the last year. D.C.'s Fox affiliate, WTTG Fox 5, in September announced it would move from Tenleytown to a 57,500 SF space in Carr Properties' Apex Building development in Downtown Bethesda.
While Montgomery County is winning battles for local media companies, Discovery Communications decided to move its headquarters to Manhattan earlier this year, a move County Executive Ike Leggett described to Bisnow as a "punch in the gut."
