Two years after buying the Watergate 600 office building, WashREIT has just lured a major tenant away from Pennsylvania Avenue.

EIG Global Energy Partners signed a 51K SF lease for the top two floors of the building, WashREIT announced Monday. It plans to move in 2020 from its current home at 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

WashREIT acquired the 300K SF office building for $135M in March 2017, as law firm Blank Rome was preparing to move out of its 90K SF office. The new owner launched a significant renovation of the property, adding a 2,300 SF conference center and a fitness club, modernizing the lobby and elevators.

The 12-story office building at 600 New Hampshire Ave. NW, built in 1972, is one of the six buildings in the famed Watergate Complex. It sits just north of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

"The iconic Watergate 600 is the ideal address for a blue chip company that is experiencing rapid growth," WashREIT Vice President Anthony Chang said in a release. "With this new addition to a prestigious tenant roster, WashREIT will have successfully leased approximately 80% of the vacancy made available by the relocation of the Blank Rome law firm."
