More Details on the Gov's Civilian Cyber Campus Proposal

The GSA has released more details about its plan to build a $540M civilian cyber campus on a website seeking funding for the initial $227.3M phase. The three-phase project would bring together agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and the Secret Service, to combat cyber security issues. It will also consolidate leased spaces in the region, saving the federal government nearly $70M, the Washington Business Journal reports. Right now all agencies that handle cyber security are spread out across 630k SF in the DC area and 92% of that space is leased from private landlords. Continuing to lease that space over the next 30 years would cost nearly $610M. The GSA received about $35M in the 2015 fiscal budget to design the cyber campus and, according to the prospectus, President Obama's 2016 budget requests another $227M. No word on the actual location of the cyber campus, but it will be somewhere in the national capital region, which includes suburban Maryland, the District, and Northern Virginia. [WBJ]
