The Wharf will open with a bang this fall with one of the nation's top rock bands signed on to headline The Anthem's opening night show.

The Foo Fighters will take the stage on Oct. 12 at the new 6,000-seat concert venue from 9:30 Club owner Seth Hurwitz and developer Hoffman-Madison Waterfront.

Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana who started the Foo Fighters in 1994, played at the 9:30 Club's original location on F Street with Nirvana and then at its current V Street location with the Foo Fighters.

Hurwitz said the Foo Fighters were always his top choice for an opening night headliner, and when he texted Grohl he accepted immediately. Grohl then toured the arena while it was under construction earlier this year and had high praise for the venue.

"The new place is set to become the No. 1 venue in America, I shit you not,” Grohl said in a release. “It has the illusion of a stadium, but the intimacy of a nightclub. It's perfect."

Costing $60M to build, the venue is below The Wharf's Parcel 2, an apartment building with 501 micro-units. The building is just one part of the 1.4M SF development PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette will deliver in October.

Hurwitz expects to host 50 concerts per year and told Bisnow in October he believed the venue would help boost the overall success of The Wharf. The development will also have 300-person bar and live music venue on Pearl Street.

Tickets for the opening night show go on sale Friday and will range from $100 to $175.
