Amazon last week backed out of preliminary plans to build a major industrial project in Prince George's County, and now the suburban Maryland county's neighbor is looking to swoop in.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich told residents during a virtual town hall Monday that he reached out to Amazon about a potential relocation of the planned fulfillment center, the Washington Post reports.

Prince George's County last month approved plans to build a 4M SF fulfillment center for Amazon at the Westphalia Town Center development. But Amazon last week informed the county it no longer planned to pursue the project.

An Amazon spokesperson, in a Monday statement, said the company had preliminary meetings but had not finalized the deal, adding that it is "no longer exploring opportunities for growth" in Prince George's County. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Elrich's comments.

The tech giant had included Montgomery County, as well as Washington, D.C., in its 20-city shortlist for the Amazon HQ2 campus, a list that did not include Prince George's County, which had submitted its own bid. All three jurisdictions ultimately lost out to Arlington County.
