Arlington residents looking to rent out their homes on Airbnb will now have a legal framework to work within.
The Arlington County Board approved regulations that allow short-term rentals with some conditions, UrbanTurf reports.
Creating a new housing designation called "accessory homestay," the measure allows hosts to rent out their homes up to 185 times a year. It places no limit on the number of units in a multifamily building that can use the service, only requiring that the unit be the primary residence of the person renting it out.
The regulations, which will go into effect at the start of the new year, follow a similar deal struck in New Orleans last week. The home-sharing company has become more open to compromise as it works to negotiate agreements in New York and San Francisco.
"We look forward to using this ordnance as a model for shaping sensible home sharing guidelines across the Commonwealth of Virginia and the entire Washington, D.C metropolitan area," Airbnb's official statement on Saturday's vote said. [UT]
