Fort Totten Boom!

Fort Totten is fast becoming one of the region's development hotspots, with tons of high-end residential and hip retail under construction. It's why we're featuring it as one of 10 exploding submarkets at Bisnow's Development Boom event next Friday. (Fort Totten had explosions in 1864, but that was more due to General Jubal Early than any general contractor.)

Cafritz Enterprises' Jane Cafritz (right, with Michelle Siever and Councilmember Jack Evans) will be on hand at the Renaissance Downtown to discuss ART Place, massive new mixed-use at the doorstep of the Fort Totten Metro. The firm will soon break ground on phase one of the project, slated to include 520 high-end apartments as well as over 100k SF of retail. Once the first phase is complete, there's room for even more residential and retail at the project; art/cultural spaces and a children's museum are also in the mix.

In another sign of Fort Totten's viability, Walmart chose the neighborhood as the landing spot for one of its six DC locations. The store is slated to open later this year on the ground floor of Fort Totten Square, a JBG/Lowe Enterprises project that'll also bring about 350 apartment units and 10k SF more retail to the neighborhood. Lowe's Joe Carrol will also be at the Renaissance to talk Fort Totten, as well as Cushman & Wakefield's Dave Dochter on East End retail, Fisher Brothers' Peter Cole on H Street, and Monument Realty's Doug Olson on Chinatown and Capitol Riverfront, among others.
