5 Ways the Toronto Blue Jays Could Damage Property

The Jays’ bats roared back to life last night, propelling the home team to a much-needed win. An offensive force to be reckoned with, here are five ways our boys in blue might cause property damage round Rogers Centre.

1. J-Bau sends a moonshot to the CN Tower

Location: 301 Front St W

Owner: Canada Lands Co

Scale: At 446.6 metres and 147 floors, it’s now just the sixth-tallest free-standing structure in the world (darn you, Burj Khalifa!), but still the tallest in the Western Hemisphere.

Risk assessment: If anybody could get a ball there, it’s Jose Bautista, especially if he's fired up over lousy umpiring. There’s a chance it lands slightly short and dings Ripley’s Aquarium, hopefully leaving the 2.5 million-litre Dangerous Lagoon (aka shark tank) intact.

2. EE crushes a ball into Ice Condos

Location: 12 York St

Developer: Lanterra Developments, Cadillac Fairview

Scale: Two Scandinavia-inspired towers—67 and 57 storeys—with Swiss cheese-like canopies. Part of York Centre, which includes a yet-to-be-built 32-storey office tower.

Risk assessment: They're the tallest buildings near the ballpark, save for the CN Tower and 6 foot, 5 inch LaTroy Hawkins. But Edwin Encarnacion's slugging power knows no bounds, so he could hit them. Cadillac Fairview sold Ontario Pension Board a 30% stake in the office tower.

3. JD goes yard on One York Street

Location: 1 York St

Developer: Menkes Developments, HOOPP

Scale: 35-storeys; 800k SF. Part of Harbour Plaza, which includes two condo towers.

Risk assessment: We've seen Josh Donaldson launch balls into the upper deck, so if the wind was right he could hook one into the new home of Sun Life Financial, which is leasing 375k SF at the under-construction tower; HOOPP is taking 132k SF.

4. Tulo smacks a jack into CityPlace

Location: Bound by Bathurst Street and Rogers Centre, Front Street and Lake Shore Boulevard West

Developer: Concord Adex

Scale: At full build-out, 20-plus buildings and nearly 20,000 residents. Final phase, Block 22, launched last year.

Risk assessment: The massive master plan development occupies a vast 44-acre swath of railway lands west of the dome, and if Troy Tulowitzki was ticked off enough over questionable strike calls he may well muster the jam to land a ball there.

5. Go-Go goes deep to Delta Toronto

Location: 75 Lower Simcoe St

Developer/owner: bcIMC, GWL Realty Advisors

Scale: 40-storey hotel with 567 guest rooms. Includes SOCO Kitchen + Bar, a 150-seat restaurant.

Risk assessment: Game 2’s goat got a clutch single and a round-tripper to help secure the Game 3 win, so there’s a possibility Ryan Goins could reach out and touch this sparkling new addition to the South Core. The project just received an urban design award from the City of Toronto.
