Tampa Bay added the fifth-highest number of construction jobs of any U.S. metro area over the 12 months ending in August, according to an analysis of government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. That means the region enjoyed a jump of 7,400 new jobs during that period.

Riverside-San Bernadino-Ontario, California, saw the largest increase: 15,800 net new jobs year-over-year.

As a percentage of the number of construction workers, Tampa did not rank quite so high, being tied for 31st with a lot of other markets, with a 10% rise. (The small market of Lewiston, Idaho, had the largest percentage rise: 27%.)

The increase in workers in the Tampa Bay market comes as the demand for construction workers in most metro markets is brisk — so brisk that many contractors face a shortage of workers. Over the same period, 274 out of 358 metro areas added construction positions, while only 52 lost jobs, according to AGC.
