San Francisco will pay nearly $4.9M to host a week-long list of events for Super Bowl 50, while Santa Clara will have all of its costs covered by the NFL Host Committee, a budget analyst's report shows.
Budget analyst Harvey Rose finds the City of Santa Clara negotiated an agreement for the Host Committee to reimburse all city expenses for hosting Super Bowl 50, including public safety services, fire and EMS—expenses expected to reach nearly $3.6M.
Meanwhile, the expected cost for San Francisco's events has grown from $4M to $4.8M. The city will host Super Bowl City (including the Fan Energy Zone, above), which will result in road closures and detours, according to the San Francisco Examiner. Some members of the Board of Supervisors are calling for new negotiations for reimbursement.
Santa Clara's local laws prohibit spending city general funds on stadium activities, making the reimbursement necessary, according to the NFL Host Committee. In the case of San Francisco, there was an understanding that the city would be able to recoup its costs through increased local hotel and sales taxes as well as state and federal support. [SFE]
