Amazon's Job Cuts To Hit R&D Campus In Sunnyvale

Amazon's planned job cuts will hit workers at a Sunnyvale campus, with more than 250 employees at location set to lose their jobs in January, the East Bay Times reported.

The campus houses Amazon Lab 126, a research and development division that works on consumer devices like the Amazon Kindle and Echo. The team used high-performance compute capacity and machine learning to speed product development and time-to-market, according to a company blog post from 2020.

These cuts are in line with those announced earlier in the week, when the e-commerce and computing giant said it would lay off 10,000 people, including those working on Alexa and the cloud gaming division.

The layoffs will span multiple addresses in Sunnyvale, including 1100 and 1160 Enterprise Way, 905 11th Ave. and 1100 Discovery Way. The company leased 385K SF in Sunnyvale at 1140 Enterprise Way and 1160 Enterprise Way in 2018, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reported at the time.

And earlier this month, a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed by the e-commerce giant indicated that the company would cut 53 jobs at its 17871 Von Karman Ave. location in Irvine, California.

Nationwide, the staggering number of tech layoffs has led to a boom in subleasing activity.
