San Francisco’s controversial tax on Airbnb hosts has drawn criticism from the home-sharing company and its hosts.
State law requires hosts to itemize all furnishings and equipment for tax purposes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Though the tax bill is small—hitting an average of $60/host—the hassle of the program has some hosts and the company up in arms. The total proceeds to the city from the tax are expected to reach $120k this year.
Airbnb called for the city to streamline the “registration nightmare” and indicated it was willing to work with the city’s assessor.
S.F. assessor-recorder Carmen Chu stood firm in her enforcement of the law, adding personal property needed to be counted for tax purposes in this way to comply with state law.
