Good Lookin' Merger

Daniel Solomon Design Partners relocated to the San Francisco office of Seattle-based Mithun, cementing the local, 40-year-old urban and mixed-use housing specialist?s union with one of the country?s top firms in sustainable design.
We spoke with Mithun chairman Bert Gregory, shown above at the big Greenbuild convention. While the two firms have a ?shared portfolio? of work and clients, Bert says the merger complements Mithun?s work with DSDP?s expertise in housing (including student, affordable, and mixed-income), place-making urban design, and higher-ed and campus planning. ?Those are important attributes of what makes great cities,? he adds. The group will operate in the Bay Area as Mithun/Solomon.

Hat tip to Sharon Risedorph, who snapped Mithun?s offices at 660 Market, which opened in 2008. It seems architects knew even before tech and media firms that people are more productive in an airy environment. (They can also practice their bowling game on that table.) Mithun has completed multiple projects for Google in Silicon Valley, two for the Yosemite Conservancy within the national park, and master planning for the San Francisco Zen Center. The firm's heavily focused on TOD development and has several net zero buildings in design or construction.
Besides namesake Daniel Solomon (above), DSDP?s Anne Torney and John Ellis join Mithun?s San Francisco principals Sandy Mendler, Antonio Pares, and Roger Gula. Solomon?s ongoing work, which will be done under the Mithun/Solomon nameplate, includes the Hunters View redevelopment (the first project of the city's HOPE SF public housing reconstruction program), as well as a TOD plan in Tianjin, China, consisting of 14,000 units of affordable housing. The combined firm is working on more than 3,000 student housing beds and 2,500 multifamily units throughout the US.
