Several developers are working to provide additional resources and housing for Bay Area veterans, who often fall through the cracks and end up struggling with homelessness. As many veterans often need more than affordable housing, multifamily developers have to incorporate programs, resources and amenities to help veterans.

Check out a few of the newest projects that will provide much-needed housing and services for local veterans.

Valor Crossing

Location: 7500 Saint Patrick Way, Dublin

Units: 66

Developer: Eden Housing

Completed: June

The $32M development focuses on veterans and their families, seniors and people with disabilities. The project, which was formerly a car dealership, is part of a master development in downtown Dublin, which will bring 310 market-rate units and 17K SF of commercial space to the area. The affordable housing project provides housing for households earning 30% to 60% of the area median income. Adobe Services and other community partners are providing on-site resident services specific to veterans’ needs.

Eagle Park Apartments

Location: 1701 West El Camino Road, Mountain View

Units: 67

Expected Completion: Fall 2018

The $33M development will offer units for low-income veterans and households with up to 60% of the Santa Clara County area median income. The building will contain 62 studios and five one-bedroom units and amenities will include roof decks, a community room with computer lab, a community kitchen and elevator access on each floor. The developer’s residential services will partner with a network of service providers, such as VA Palo Alto and Adobe Services, and will offer programs to help residents with housing stability and health and wellness and encourage social interaction.

Valley View Senior Homes

Location: 31 Theresa Ave., American Canyon

Units: 70

Developer: Satellite Affordable Housing Associates

General Contractor: Midstate Construction

Expected Completion: October

This $26.5M senior housing project will offer apartments and cottage-style homes to very low- and extremely low-income seniors and veterans aged 55 and older. The development will set aside 22 units for veterans earning up to 50% of the area median income and 17 will be available for homeless veterans. Another 17 units will have project-based Section 8 housing status. On-site services and activities will support health and wellness, independent living and aging in place.

1150 Third St.

Location: 1150 Third St., San Francisco

Units: 119

Developer: Chinatown Community Development Center and Swords to Plowshares

Architect: Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects

Expected Completion: November 2019

The $80M project, which is expected to secure funding in December, will provide 62 studios and one-bedroom units for formerly homeless vets and 57 units for low-income families earning up to 60% of the area median income. On-site supportive services will be available. The community also will include a landscaped courtyard and a parking garage for 24 cars and 72 bikes.

Tabora Gardens Senior Apartments

Location: 3557 Tabora Drive, Antioch

Units: 85

Developer: Satellite Affordable Housing Associates

General Contractor: Sunseri Construction

Expected Completion: March

These apartments will provide 33 units specifically for veterans, including 12 for formerly chronically homeless. The units also will be available for seniors and people with special needs. Qualifying residents must have an income of up to 50% of the area median income and be at least 55 years old. Amenities include a community room with kitchen, an activity room with five computer stations and an exercise room. On-site services will include a full-time resident services coordinator, community programs and twice-weekly van transportation to recreation, medical and shopping destinations.

Rocky Hill Veterans Housing

Location: 582 Rocky Hill Road, Vacaville

Units: 39

Developer: Community Development Partners

Architect: G7A Gonzales Architects

Expected Completion: December

This $21M veterans housing project will use modified steel shipping containers from GrowthPoint Structures. Of the 39 units, 29 will be reserved for veterans with a preference for veterans for the remaining units. Eleven units will serve as permanent supportive housing and provide housing, rental assistance and other supportive services.
