County of Monterey and City of Soledad officials and Eden Housing and South County Housing executives opened the $21M Camphora Apartments project yesterday. The apartment complex was built to help farm workers afford housing in the expensive market.

Camphora offers 44 units of two- and three-bedroom apartments for residents with annual incomes between 30% and 60% of Monterey County’s median income. The apartments will provide environmentally responsible accommodations.

“This used to be a run-down area, but it’s now LEED-H Platinum certified affordable housing with superb community spaces,” said Congressman Sam Farr when praising the efforts of Eden and all those involved.

The KTGY Architecture + Planning-designed project covers 4.6 acres and was conceived from the ground up to exceed the state’s energy-efficiency mandates. Features such as high-efficiency heating, lighting and irrigation exceed Title 24 standards by 38%.

“We are pleased to partner with South County Housing and with the County of Monterey in providing beautiful new homes for farm workers in the Salinas Valley,” said Eden Housing president Linda Mandolini.
