San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer yesterday announced the launch of INNOVATE San Diego Week; it will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7. INNOVATE San Diego Week includes a series of events showcasing innovation throughout the San Diego-Tijuana megaregion.

“San Diego is a city with incredibly talented people, groundbreaking companies, premier universities and an innovative spirit that can’t be matched anywhere else,” Mayor Faulconer said at yesterday's gathering at Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama. “It’s why we are proud to introduce INNOVATE San Diego Week—an event that will showcase San Diego’s ingenuity, creativity and innovation economy on a global stage, by bringing together nearly a dozen great events under one banner.”

The week is a collaborative effort between the city, Maker Faire San Diego, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp, UC San Diego's SD Hacks and UCSD Design Lab, Twitch’s TwitchCon 2016 and CRSSD Festival.

San Diego placed 16th nationally on CBRE’s 2016 Tech Talent Scorecard, which ranks 50 US and Canadian markets according to their ability to attract and grow tech talent.

The week will kick off with TwitchCon 2016, a celebration of the Twitch Community of streamers and viewers and the brands that create games, hardware and software at the SD Convention Center.

The second annual Makers Faire San Diego will take place Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 in Balboa Park. This two-day event offers hands-on activities for all ages that highlight technologies and binational innovation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, fashion, robotics, food and crafts. Balboa Park Cultural Partnership executive director Peter Comiskey tells Bisnow this event drew more than 200 makers last year and more are expected at this year’s event, as two additional organizations have joined the fun.

UCSD’s SD Hacks, the largest student-run hack-a-thon in San Diego, will run Oct. 2 to Oct. 4. Hackers worldwide will come together for a 36-hour sprint to build, design and develop. The UCSD Design Lab, which focuses on transforming the world through design-driven innovation, is planning a Smart City Challenge.

This Mini Burning Man, created by CoLab's Brock Ritchey (seated in forefront) and welder Wylie Weldy, is going to Burning Man later this month.

INNOVATE week will include the San Diego International Film Festival, produced by the San Diego Film Foundation. SDFF executive and artistic director Tonya Mantooth says this film festival not only brings the world’s filmmaking community to the city, but also hundreds of international press and thousands of international visitors.

The week also will include CRSSD Festival, a electronic dance music festival produced by Goldenvoice and San Diego concert promoter CRSSD FNGRS.

INNOVATE San Diego Week will conclude with San Diego Manufacturing Day, the largest manufacturing gathering on the West Coast, which will showcase more than 3,000 San Diego manufacturing companies and include facility tours, student engagement and community events.

This daylong event is sponsored by the SD Regional EDC, whose COO, Lauree Sahba, said it will demonstrate the diversity of the region’s manufacturing industry, which ranges from genomics sequencers and drones to guitars and surfboards.
