The Poway City Council has agreed to provide $1.8M to push along development of a new community/senior center. The total estimated cost for the new structure is $18M.

The 36k SF facility, which will be named the Mickey Cafagna Community Center in honor of Poway’s late mayor, will replace three existing buildings—an auditorium, a senior center and a small park staff office building. The new structure will house all three of these functions, but also will provide additional classrooms, a recreational activity room, and multi-purpose rooms, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

The project has been planned for 10 years, but was put on hold when Gov. Jerry Brown dissolved redevelopment agencies across the state. The council has been setting aside funds each year to fund the project. Once plans are completed, the council will take another vote before construction can begin. [SDUT]
