Cross-border relations, investing in infrastructure and keeping football in San Diego are among San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer's top priorities for 2016, he told the crowd at NAIOP San Diego's second annual organizational address.

The mayor said any plan to fund the stadium will have to be fair to gain voter support. He favors a plan that would split costs evenly between the Chargers, the NFL and taxpayers.

He praised the real estate industry for its role in growing San Diego's economy, saying, “When you are successful, our city is successful.” The proliferation of commercial, industrial and mixed-use projects allows the city to invest in civic projects.

Faulconer also discussed the vital cross-border relationship between San Diego and Tijuana. “It isn’t two cities. It isn’t just San Diego or Tijuana,” he said. “This is a meg-aregion.” (For more on the mega-region, join us at Bisnow's April 7 event!) Organizations on both sides of the border are working to ensure country lines don’t act as economic barriers. He said reaching this goal involves enhancing transportation. Additional motorist lanes have opened at the San Ysidro crossing and, in December, the nation’s first cross-border airport terminal opened at Tijuana International Airport.
